I just got home from Mission Hospital after a long day, but tonight we have much to be thankful for.
Debbie’s surgery went extremely well.
Dr. Hoshino repaired the multiple fractures in her right knee with three plates and multiple screws. He also discovered a torn meniscus during surgery and repaired that as well. He told me he was very pleased with the results.
One of the best pieces of news is that Debbie no longer needs the brace that has kept her leg straight for the past eight days. They want her to begin working on bending her knee again.
That may sound like a small thing, but right now the small things feel pretty big. Sitting comfortably in a chair. Taking a shower. Eating a meal sitting up.
And Debbie is really looking forward to washing her hair!
We also learned that there are several small fractures in her left ankle. That means she will not be able to put weight on either leg for about six weeks. We know there is a long road ahead.
Tonight was difficult. When the nerve block wore off, Debbie experienced severe pain. After 57 years of marriage, it is hard to watch the person you love hurt that much and know you can’t take it away. Thankfully, they were eventually able to get the pain under better control.
Tomorrow she will have another CT scan to look more closely at the area where she is still experiencing pain.
So tonight we are tired, grateful, and taking this one day at a time.
The surgery is behind us. It went extremely well. And for that, we thank God.
If you would pray specifically for us, please pray that the doctors can find the right balance to manage Debbie’s pain and that God will give her strength, patience, and good spirits as she begins the long road of recovery. And please pray for tomorrow’s CT scan and that it brings good news.
We continue to be overwhelmed by how many of you are praying for us, encouraging us, and loving us.
Thank you for walking this journey with us.
Jim
