Can we talk about something that’s rarely discussed in ministry circles? Letting go. Not just of small things, but of major responsibilities, roles, and even ministries we’ve poured our hearts into.
In 2022, Debbie and I transitioned Standing Stone Ministry’s leadership to Jeramy and Jerusha Clark. It wasn’t just about finding capable leaders – it was about truly letting go. And let me tell you, it was one of the hardest and most beautiful experiences of our ministry life.
You see, letting go isn’t just about timing or succession planning. It’s about trust – trust in God’s plan, trust in the next generation of leaders, and trust that your identity isn’t tied to your position.
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1
Looking back, I can see how God prepared us for this transition. He taught us through every business venture, every ministry experience, that nothing we “own” is really ours. We’re just stewards, holding things loosely, ready to release them when He calls us to.
What surprised me most was the freedom that came with letting go. Yes, there was grief and uncertainty. But there was also joy in seeing fresh vision and new approaches emerge. It taught me that sometimes the most significant act of leadership is stepping aside and cheering on those who come after us.
Maybe you’re facing a season of letting go right now. Whether it’s a ministry role, a cherished program, or even a dream you’ve held onto, remember that God’s plans are bigger than our positions. Sometimes letting go isn’t an end – it’s a beginning.
I’d love to hear your stories of letting go. What has God taught you through these transitions? Let’s encourage each other in these sometimes challenging but always transformative seasons.
