You know what’s fascinating about Jesus? With all the crowds following Him, He often focused on individual encounters. Think about it – Nicodemus, the woman at the well, Zacchaeus. Some of His most profound ministry moments happened one-on-one.
This truth hit home for me during our early days at Standing Stone Ranch. We could have designed a program for hundreds, but God led us to focus on one couple at a time. I remember questioning this approach. Wouldn’t it be more efficient to reach more people at once?
But there’s something powerful about sitting across from someone, giving them your full attention, and really hearing their story. No distractions, no time limits, no agenda except to be present and listen. It’s in these intimate settings that real transformation often happens.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17
I remember Lyle and Dana, our first retreat couple. Just them, Debbie and me, sharing meals, taking walks, having deep conversations. The impact of that focused time together was profound – not just for them, but for us too. It confirmed that sometimes, ministry is most effective when it’s most personal.
Over the years, I’ve learned that one-on-one ministry isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being present, listening deeply, and creating a safe space for God to work. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply sit with someone in their struggle, letting them know they’re not alone.
What’s holding you back from engaging in one-on-one ministry? Maybe you feel inadequate or worry about having the right words. Remember, God doesn’t call the equipped – He equips the called. Your willingness to be present might be exactly what someone needs today.
