Yesterday brought one of those small victories that suddenly feels very big.
After more than two weeks, Debbie was finally able to take a shower and shampoo her hair. It was wonderful to see how happy something so simple could make her. After everything she has been through, those little things suddenly don’t seem so little anymore.
But there was something else yesterday that meant even more to me.
Slowly, but increasingly, Debbie is coming back. Her personality is returning. Her sense of humor is showing up again, and she is even beginning to tease me. I didn’t realize how much I had missed that until I heard it again.
These past two weeks have included so much pain, uncertainty, frustration, and sadness. There have been moments when I wondered how long it would be before I saw the Debbie I know again.
Yesterday, I saw her.
We still have a long road ahead of us, but I came away encouraged. Little by little, I feel like I’m getting my beautiful wife back.
And that may have been the best part of the day.
